How To Quit A Babysitting Job
This may not be on the minds of all babysitters when they start out but sometimes, it's equally as important to know how to quit a babysitting job as it is to know how to get hired. Perhaps you are moving on to college or you simply have outgrown the time consuming nature of having to babysit a kid at 9 PM when you have an exam the next day. It is important that you let your employers know that you are not going to work for them anymore and explain the precise reasons why.
The most pertinent factor to consider when quitting a baby sitting job is to remain courteous. Even if your term there ended badly, be professional about it. If not for the family you worked for than for yourself and your reputation. Politeness is the ultimate sign of maturity and no matter how they take it, you should always opt for the high road. Secondly, when enumerating your reasons for leaving, don't lie. Be honest about it and they will be sure to understand. If you want to leave because it has done a number on your already strenuous schedule, then say "I'm sorry Mr. and Mrs. X-- I have too much on my plate and as much as I enjoyed working for you, I unfortunately cannot continue to do so." Make sure to give them a two-week's notice (just as in any job) so that they can have enough time to search for another babysitter.
Their reactions may vary but if they are of the few who refuse to accept the news, then continue to assert what you've been saying with resolve. Sometimes, they will put you through an elaborate guilt trip: "You can't do this to us; we need you! Next week, we're both going on conferences." Even if they offer to pay you more money, simply tell them that you apologize for the unfortunate situation and that you must absolutely end your employment there. You have your own life to worry about afterall.
